Malaysia adalah syurga makanan, tetapi ia juga menjadi tempat pembuangan makanan dalam jumlah yang besar. Setiap hari Malaysia menghasilkan kira-kira 15,000 tan makanan dan sisa dari dapur yang mana jumlah ini cukup untuk mengisi tujuh setengah buah padang bola atau untuk memberi makan kepada 7.5 juta orang dalam sehari. Dan perlu diingat, sisa makanan mengandungi kandungan kelembapan yang tinggi dan kebanyakan sisa makanan di Malaysia dibuang terus ke pusat pelupusan sampah.
Municipal solid waste in Malaysia contains a high amount of organic matters, particularly food waste and most food waste are disposed of at the disposal site. High organic content and high moisture content of waste together with improper waste treatment and disposal have increased the risk of high greenhouse gases emission which can contribute to global warming. Besides, since high amount of waste are sent to landfill, we are lacking of new landfill spaces.
